Cardozo Shaw Neighborhood Association

The Cardozo Shaw Neighborhood Association (CSNA) is the most active resident-based community organization in the U Street neighborhood.  Over the past 15 years, CSNA has worked closely with our neighbors, public officials, and businesses to improve and maintain the quality of life for everyone in our neighborhood.  Take a moment to join CSNA and be a part of the exciting U Street community.

The Boundaries of CSNA in Northwest, Washington, DC are:

• 16th Street to the West
• 8th Street to the East
• "S" Street to the South and
• Barry Place to Florida Avenue to W Street to the North

Acts As An Agent For Change
CSNA has been instrumental in bringing new businesses, addressing crime problems, and creating partnerships with schools, churches, businesses, and other community organizations to enhance the community.

Helps Your Voice Be Heard
CSNA communicates with City Officials, property owners, the business community, the media, and others on behalf of members regarding issues such as parking, nuisance properties, trash problems, and illegal renovations and construction.

Provides Relevant Information
We keep you up-to-date on what's happening in the community via a monthly newsletter, a constantly updated website, email listserv, and at our regularly scheduled month meetings.

Brings Neighbors Together
We're a diverse lot - straight, gay, African-American, Hispanic, Anglo, Asian, old, young, single and married. We share common interests and are willing to work together to get things accomplished that benefit us all and highlight our diversity. Every year, we co-sponsor a HUGE Community Wide clean up day with other non-profits to benefit the neighborhood youth.

Fights To Create A Safer Community
CSNA works directly with the Police Department and other city agencies to ensure members' concerns are heard and receive the appropriate attention. We also share information and strategies to address and prevent crime problems.

Preserves The Historic Character of The Area
CSNA led a ten-year effort to designate the area a Historic District, which was approved in January of 1998. Our Greater U Street Review Committee meets regularly to review renovation projects and new construction within our District boundaries.

Encourages Economic Development
CSNA devotes considerable time to the economic development that is central to the area's well being. We have played no small part in bringing about the revival of the U Street corridor, and continue to promote sound development of the area including new projects and renovations to our historic buildings and sites.
