From June 30 to July 6, 2008, the Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America (ESFNA) will hold its 25th Anniversary Soccer Tournament and Festival at RFK stadium. CSNA has been working with ESFNA organizers, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), other DC Government offices, and Councilmember Jim Graham to ensure that the impact on our neighborhood, especially the 9th and U Street area, which many Ethipoian businesses call home, is properly managed and controlled. CSNA will continue to work with all of these parties throughout the tournament and festival and post updates on our website and to our email list, "U Street News" as additional information is available. According to a recent article in The Washington Post, the tournament has become one of the largest gatherings of Ethiopians outside their homeland. The Washington Post also cites the fact that over 31,000 Ethiopian immigrants -- or about one-fifth of all U.S. Ethiopian residents – reside in the DC area – which makes the U Street area an entertainment destination for soccer fans for the duration of the tournament. MPD, which has been very responsive to CSNA concerns in this regard has assigned Lt. Alberto Jova to coordinate MPD's Third District efforts over the next few days. Lt. Jova can be reached at
