A lot of exciting news was shared at the April 2006 General Membership Meeting! CSNA is gearing up for the spring with the Spring Cleanup on May 13th. We also gave a big 'U Street' welcome to residents from other parts of the metropolitan area that attended concerts on U street during Jazz Appreciation Month. - Spring newsletter has been published and mailed to members. Distribution of newsletter is ongoing.
- CSNA will be hosting a City Council debate on June 8, 2006 at 7PM at the True Reformer building in place of our normal general membership meeting.
Community Reports & Announcements - Councilmember Jim Graham Update – www.grahamwone.com or 202-724-8181- A bill proposed that would maintain rent control in the city has been shot down in favor of legislation proposed by Mayor Williams that allows for landlords to increase rent by 10% annually, and limits tenants to only one year to appeal increases. Currently Fenty and Orange are in support of the mayor's bill. Graham is seeking support for the alternate bill that would provide for better rent control in the city.
- ANC 1B Update – Phil Spalding www.anc1b.org- The ANC is currently reviewing a lot of liquor license renewal applications and recommends that CSNA appoints someone to monitor tentative changes. Current liquor license renewal applications being reviewed include Black Cat, 9:30 Club, and Cue Bar. Several Entertainment Endorsement Proposals are also being considered including those introduced by Alero, Creme, and Restaurant Judy. The ANC would like CSNA to get community input on changes.
Committee Business and Regular ReportsTreasurer’s Report: Chuck Baxter, Treasurer- CSNA's balance as of April 1 is $6,567.67 with a $75.00 in dues collected during the month of March. CSNA in total has $6,192.91 available for use. Membership & Communications: Sommer Mathis -

- Membership Drive Update - Newsletter Dispersal was the kickoff to the 2006 membership drive. About 100 newsletters were mailed. Currently CSNA has 40 paid members.
Transportation and Parking: Cheryl Cort -

- Discussion of Howard University proposal for an above ground parking facility - designation of Cheryl Cort to represent CSNA in this affair- It was suggested that CSNA formally votes to oppose Howard University's proposal to build a parking lot at the corner of Sherman and Barry Streets. Howard's explanation for building a parking lot doesn't correspond with reasoning on application and the parking lot has the potential to cause dramatic traffic problems in the future. It is suggested that CSNA takes the following actions on this matter:
- Oppose parking lot
- Assist residents in RPP request
- Request that Howard develop an extensive transportation management plan.

Spring Planting Update - Planting has been moved from the Spring to the fall in order to make sure that enough long-term support exists so that the trees will last. Information on the new date and planning meetings will be coming forward in the coming months. Spring Cleanup - May 13th- In the process of ordering tools.

- Responsible Hospitality Panel- Meeting on pilot program at 9th and U Street that would look at development.
- Jazz Appreciation Month - CSNA Social at Twins Jazz; Free concert at Lincoln Theater on April 28.
- MidCity Business Association Update – Scott Pomeroy- banners will go up during early May in the greater U Street area from 18th Streets to 9th Streets and from S Street to Florida Avenue.
