During the month of November a series of some eight sexual assaults occurred in the department’s Third District. These cases had some similarities and a reward of up to $10,000 was offered by the department to anyone who provided information that led to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.

At approximately 6 pm on Saturday, December 2, 2006, Third District Focus Mission Team members saturating the area of the sexual assaults stopped a subject following a woman in the 200 block of T Street, NW.  Focus Mission Team members obtained information pertaining to the subject that was given to members of the department’s Sex Offense Branch.

At approximately 12:05 this morning, Monday, December 4, 2006, the subject in question came to the Sex Offense Branch office.  After an ongoing subsequent investigation, Sex Offense Branch detectives charged the subject with Assault with the Intent to Commit First Degree Sexual Abuse While Armed/Knife.  He was charged in connection with the case that occurred on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at approximately 4:30 pm in the 400 block of Elm Street, NW.

The subject is identified as 17-year-old Avon Marquell Pittman of the 4700 block of Temple Hills Road in Temple Hills, Maryland.  He has been charged as an adult.  He is expected to be arraigned today. The investigation into these cases is ongoing.
