The project is currently in the planning stages, and JBG Companies has committed to working with the U Street Neighborhood Association throughout the development of the project plans through this U Street Hotel Project Page. The Association will collect information from the neighborhood, JBG, the DC government, and others, and make it available on this U Street Hotel project page: ustreethotel.ustreet-dc.org. The proposed project would replace the existing building at this corner, which houses Rite Aid, BB&T bank, Pizza Hut, and other businesses. JBG is seeking to build an approximate four-star boutique hotel, which at a proposed 103-feet high (87 feet from curb to parapet) could include 239 guestrooms, 4,500 square feet of meeting space, and 25,000 square feet of retail. At this time, Rite Aid and BB&T would remain tenants in the new building. JBG is seeking to develop this project through the District's "Planned Unit Development" (PUD) process, which requires public involvement. JBG's tentative plans as of March 2009 is to submit a PUD application to the DC government in summer 2009. Pending approvals, construction would begin in late 2011; with the hotel opening in 2014.
